How to Prepare for a Chiropractic Care Appointment

Picture
By: Dr. Xavier A. Ortiz Ramírez DC, MD, NRCME

Are you turning to a chiropractor to treat recurring pain and discomfort or would you just like to lead a healthy and natural life?  If so, what do you need to do to prepare for your first appointment?

Make it.  You should call as soon as you start experiencing pain.  Some chiropractors, especially those with limited competition in the area, have a long wait.  Also, make it known that you are available for last-minute appointments.  If someone cancels at the last minute, his or her appointment may go to you.  Speaking of cancellations, if you must cancel your first appointment, be sure to call.  You can be charged for a no-show if you do not provide adequate notice.  Doctors also have the right to refuse patients.  If you constantly do not show up without canceling ahead of time, treatment can be refused.

Write down your symptoms.  You suffer from pain, that is a given.  Do you know exactly where it hurts, when it hurts, or what you are usually doing at the time?  You should before schedule the first appointment.  Although you know, write it down.  Seeing a chiropractor for the first time can be overwhelming.  It is easy to forget certain things, even though you do know them.  So, write down anything related to your pain and discomfort including when it hurts, where it hurts, and how bad.  Bring your notes with you to your appointment and refer to them.

Write down questions to ask.  Your chiropractor should answer all of your questions by the second appointment.  After a quick physical exam and the gathering of your medical history, they will diagnose the problem and decide on a course of treatment.  For example, those suffering from spinal distortions due to muscle contractions can get a onetime neck adjustment.  Those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis can get ongoing therapeutic massages and regular joint adjustments.  Most chiropractors will explain the treatment for you in detail.  This may already answer some of your questions but ask the others.

Review your medical history.  Each medical history form varies, but you will be asked many common questions.  For example, you will be asked about family history.  Does anyone in your immediate family suffer from spinal problems?  Do you see a primary care physician?  Are you taking any medications?  You can usually answer these questions on the spot but think about them ahead of time and prepare.  If taking medications for diabetes or another condition, write down the names.

Ask to pick up forms ahead of time.  For the first appointment, you will be asked to arrive early.  This is so that you can fill out payment forms, insurance forms, and medical history forms.  If leaving work early to attend your appointment, time is vital.  Inquire about picking up the forms and completing them at home.  This way you do not need to arrive too early.

Gather your insurance cards.  If you are covered by medical insurance, do not leave home without your insurance cards.  Your chiropractor will need the numbers and they may request a copy of your insurance card and driver’s license.  Now is also the time to ask about filing.  Most chiropractors will have their secretaries file all insurance claims, but some leave this up to you.

Determine how you will pay.  If you are not covered by medical insurance, you must pay for the costs out-of-pocket.  Know how you can pay ahead of time and develop a plan.  Do you need to save money or borrow from a relative?  Have a plan in place.  Try asking for a payment plan, but they are rarely given to first-time patents.  As for accepted methods of payment, ask.  Some chiropractors accept cash, checks, money orders, and credit cards, while others prefer cash only.

Chiropractic Care:  Payment Options

Picture
By: Dr. Xavier A. Ortiz Ramírez DC, MD, NRCME

Are you experiencing pain, discomfort, or decreased mobility?  Whatever the cause or if you are unsure, you should seek chiropractic care.  This care is 100% natural and has many benefits.  What are they?

As previously stated, chiropractic care is natural.  It involves manual therapy, also known as hand therapy.  A chiropractor may use an MRI or x-rays to diagnose a problem, but that is it.  Therapeutic massages, fusions, alignments, and adjustments are done with the hands and precision force.  Chiropractors believe that pain needs to stop, but they do more than just mask the pain with medication.  They do not prescribe medication.  Instead, they go directly to the source and fix the problem.

If you like the sound of chiropractic care, you may be ready to seek relief.  You will want to call and schedule an appointment with a local care provider, but what about payment.  How will you pay for treatment?  It depends on the care center in question, but you should have several options.

Before worrying about how you intend to pay for a chiropractor, consider insurance.  Do you have health insurance?  If so, contact your insurance provider immediately.  Many insurance providers are now embracing chiropractic care.  They realize the benefits and decreased costs of natural relief.  If your insurance coverage includes chiropractors, examine your options.  Are you free to choose any provider that accepts your insurance or must you opt for a special in-network doctor?

If you have medical coverage, determine how much is covered.  You may be required to pay 20% of the bill or have an affordable $11 co-pay.  If you do not have medical coverage, you will need to cover the entire cost yourself and out-of-pocket.  What are your options?

Personal checks.  Most chiropractors do accept personal checks as a method of payment.  They realize that consumers prefer these checks to carry around cash.  Checks are ideal, as you receive an additional receipt.  There is a record that you paid your bill.

Credit cards.  Not all chiropractors accept credit cards as a method of payment.  This is usually due to fees.  Credit card fees can be costly.  If your care provider does accept credit cards, only use them as a last resort.  The cost of treatment can significantly increase with high-interest rates and late fees.

Debit cards.  If a chiropractor accepts credit cards, they should also accept debit cards, also known as bank cards.  These cards will need to be processed as a credit, but the funds will be withdrawn from your bank immediately.  If you rarely carry personal checks, a debit card is a quick and easy way to pay for treatment.

Cash.  All chiropractors should accept cash.  They are ideal for low amounts, such as when you are only responsible for an insurance co-pay.  Most chiropractic treatments are affordable.  Unless paying an overdue balance, you will not need to have thousands of dollars on hand.  If you are unsure which methods of payment your provider accepts, always bring cash.

You now know what forms of payment most chiropractors accept, but you may have affordability concerns.  How will you pay your bills?

In full.  Most chiropractors require payment made in full after each appointment.  As previously stated, this will not be high.  A little bit of planning and preparation can do the trick.  At your first appointment, your chiropractor may recommend a later appointment for a therapeutic massage or adjustment.  Inquire about costs.  You will only get an estimate, but you should have a week or two to save that money.

Payment plan.  As previously stated, most chiropractors prefer payment in full after each appointment.  This lowers their risk of losing money.  There may be some exceptions, especially with long-term care.  If you need treatment, like if you are in severe pain and your chiropractor knows this, they may be willing to make an exception.  That exception could include monthly or weekly payment plans.

5 Reasons to Take Your Child to the Chiropractor

By: Dr. Xavier A. Ortiz Ramírez DC, MD, NRCME

Are you a parent?  No parent wants to see their children in pain, but it does happen from time to time.  Children occasionally get headaches, suffer from allergies, get earaches, and have back pain.  The list is endless.  As a parent, you know that children are like magnets to injuries, pain, and illness.  Although most are minor, care should be sought, but where should you turn?  Instead of heading to your child’s primary care physician, head to a local chiropractor.  Why?

1 – It Is Safe

Chiropractic care is natural medicine.  For that reason, it is safe.  If your child experiences pain and discomfort, their primary care physician is likely to suggest over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribe prescription medication.  This may work, but the pain usually returns.  Why?  They only mask the problem.  Yes, some forms of pain and discomfort may disappear on their own with time and self-care, but there may be a more serious underlying issue.  You will not know unless you turn to a chiropractor.  Their job is to treat the pain by going directly to the source and fixing the problem.

Chiropractic care involves manual, hands-on, therapy.  Since medications are not prescribed and the hands provide treatment, it is safe for individuals of all ages, including children.

2 – Most Treatment is covered by Health Insurance

It is no secret that raising kids is expensive.  Add in the cost of medical care, and the overall cost soars.  Luckily, many insurance providers extend coverage for chiropractic care.  Some will offer discounts for opting for an in-network provider, but you can seek care anywhere your insurance is accepted.

If your family is not covered by medical insurance, there are still benefits to seeking care.  Just look for a chiropractor with affordable rates or one who is willing to set up a flexible payment plan.

3 – They Treat a Wide Range of Problems

Many adults mistakenly believe that chiropractors only treat spinal, back, and neck problems.  Yes, this is their specialty, but more is offered.  For example, did you know that a chiropractor can treat and lessen the onset of earaches and ear infections?  They can.  Blocked draining pathways cause most ear infections.  Chiropractic adjustments and therapeutic massages are used to open up those pathways and promote the proper flow of fluid.  If your child is experiencing pain, no matter how often or severe, a chiropractor can provide relief and that relief is usually long-lasting.

4 – It Is Easy to Find a Chiropractor

If you are unfamiliar with chiropractic care, you may have not given any thought to the offices in your area.  You may have driven past one each day on the way to work.  Turn to your local phonebook, a standard internet search, online business directories, or your insurance company to find a local chiropractor.  Call and schedule an appointment for your child and wait.  It is as easy as that!

5 – The Benefits

Last, but not least, there are many benefits to chiropractic care.  As previously stated, medications are not prescribed.  Treatment is natural and safe.  It is also long-lasting, as chiropractors do not mask the pain, they treat it.  As a parent, this should be very important.  Successful chiropractic care can allow your child to return to their happy normal self.  Reduced pain and increased mobility mean more fun and less suffering.

Chiropractic Care:  What to Expect

Picture
By: Dr. Xavier A. Ortiz Ramírez DC, MD, NRCME

Do you suffer from constant pain and discomfort?  For most, this is due to an injury.  For others, there is no explanation.  Pain can easily be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers, but relief is short-lived.  Since pain relievers do have risks, especially with prolonged use, it is important to seek proper medical care.  One of your options is chiropractic care.

If you were not already aware, chiropractic care is a form of medicine.  Some classify it as alternative medicine, as the treatment options are quite different.  Most notice a difference between the care provided by a chiropractor and a primary care physician.  Chiropractors believe in manual therapy.  This is therapy with the use of the hands.  Common methods of solving pain problems include therapeutic massages and manipulation.  For example, neck pain may be treated with a neck realignment.

If you like the sound of chiropractic care, the first step is to schedule an appointment.  Chiropractors can be found online with a standard internet search or an online business directory.  Most are also listed in the yellow pages of local phone books, under the heading of physicians or chiropractic care.  If you have several local options, look for the best care at the most affordable price.  Some insurance providers do cover chiropractic care.  If covered by insurance, speak to a representative to see if your care qualifies for coverage and to familiarize yourself with in-network providers.

Not long after making your appointment, you will arrive for it.  The wait can be as short as two days, but if two months.  The more chiropractors you have in your area, the shorter the wait should be.  As for your first visit, it will be like a consultation appointment.  Your chiropractor will take your medical history.  They may take your blood pressure, measure your height and weight.  Your source of pain will be examined, like your neck, hands, knees, or feet.

Some chiropractors can diagnose a problem by simply looking at or feeling your source of pain.  However, additional tests may be needed.  These may include an MRI or an x-ray.  Some chiropractors will begin treatment immediately, but you may need to return for an additional appointment.  It will depend on the length of your appointment, the type of care needed, and how soon a course of treatment was decided on.

As for the second appointment, this depends.  As previously stated, treatment may have started right away.  If not, it will start here at the second appointment.  Once again, treatment depends on the diagnosis made.  If your chiropractor wants to treat your neck pain with realignment, they will start the manipulation.  If ongoing therapeutic massages were recommended, your treatment will start.

After the initial treatment has been performed, it is important to communicate with your chiropractor.  For example, if regular therapeutic massages are needed, you automatically know that continued care is needed.  On the other hand, if your neck was realigned, you may mistakenly believe you are done.  Despite the common misconception, chiropractic care does not always translate into continued care, but there are benefits.  After a neck realignment, therapy may be needed.  Patients regain mobility they never had before; it takes time and practice to readjust to it.

In addition to wondering about chiropractic care visits, many patients are also curious about payment.  Not all insurance providers cover chiropractic care.  And, not all chiropractors choose to work with insurance providers.  If you are uninsured and paying out-of-pocket, this will not be a concern for you.  Instead, examine your available payment options.  They do vary.  Some care centers accept credit cards, debit cards, and checks, while others only take cash.

Returning to insurance coverage, do not make any assumptions.  Always speak to an insurance provider first.  If chiropractic care is covered, determine by how much.  Do you need to pay for a percentage of treatment costs or just a co-pay?  Can you seek care from any chiropractor, or must you work with an in-network provider?  These are all questions you need answers to before scheduling an appointment.

How to Find a Chiropractor

Picture
By: Dr. Xavier A. Ortiz Ramírez DC, MD, NRCME

Do you suffer from painful recurring headaches, arthritis, were you in a car accident, or are you just experiencing pain and discomfort?  Most Americans head to their medicine cabinet or their primary care physician.  These provide you with temporary relief, but don’t you want more?  If so, schedule an appointment with a local chiropractor.  Sometimes finding a good chiropractor is like finding a treasure.

What makes chiropractors better than over-the-counter pain relievers and primary care physicians?  They believe in natural medical care.  A chiropractor may use x-rays and MRIs to diagnose a problem, especially after a car accident.  The treatment, however, is hands-on, literally.  It is known as manual therapy.  Chiropractors commonly perform alignments and adjustments.  Precision force is used with the hands to thrust joints into their proper position.  For most, this results in a reduction or elimination in pain, as well as increased mobility.

If you like the sound of chiropractic care, you may be ready to schedule an appointment.  First, you need to familiarize yourself with chiropractors in and around your area.  How?

Your local phone books.  In the back of your phone book, you will find the yellow pages or the business directory section.  Chiropractors may be listed under the headings of “physicians,” or “chiropractic care.”  Your phone book will give you the names, addresses, and phone numbers of chiropractors.

A standard internet searches.  When performing a standard internet search, search with your city and state.  You will be linked to several websites.  Some of those are directories, where many chiropractors are listed.  These websites are like phone books; they provide you with just the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of local care providers.  What you want to look for are chiropractor websites.  In addition to getting the contact information, you should get in-depth information about the provider, such as specialties, background, and see pictures of the office.

An online business directory.  Many websites serve as online business directories.  From Yahoo.com, select “Local,” from the main heading.  Enter your city and state and the phrase “chiropractor.”  You will see local listings for nearby chiropractors.  Most only include your specific city, but you can expand the search to nearby communities.  Some online business directories link to you to provider websites if they exist.  Many also enable ratings and reviews.

From your insurance provider.  If you are covered by health insurance, see if chiropractic care is covered.  Although some still classify this natural form of healthcare as alternative medicine, many are now embracing the benefits.  There is a good chance your insurance provider extends coverage for care.  When calling to ask, inquire about providers in their network or known providers that accept your insurance.  Your insurance company can provide you with names, addresses, and phone numbers.

Recommendations from those you know.  Since many Americans, insurance providers, and employers are now embracing chiropractic care and realizing the many benefits, its popularity continues to increase.  You may know someone who has seen or uses the services of a chiropractor.  Ask those that you know, such as friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors.  Ask for the name, address, and phone number.  Be sure to ask for feedback too.

As you can see, there are many ways to find chiropractic care providers in or around your community.  Once you familiarize yourself with your options, the next step is to choose a care provider.  When doing so, consider the reputation, feedback, costs, and the wait until you can get the first appointment.

Chiropractic Care:  What If Your Primary Care Physician Says No

Picture
By: Dr. Xavier A. Ortiz Ramírez DC, MD, NRCME

Here is the scenario:  You are suffering painful, recurring migraines.  You head to your primary care physician.  They prescribe pain medication to treat your migraine headaches.  You are sent on your way to deal with the pain as it returns.  You stop and think “maybe this isn’t right.”  You ask your primary care physician about chiropractic care.  They tell you it does not work or that you are only wasting your money.  What should you do?  Run.

For years, there have been some troubling problems between the traditional medical field and chiropractic care.  Some primary care physicians believe that chiropractors are nothing but glorified spa masseuses.  Is this true?  No.  These problems are slowly decreasing.  More primary care physicians are realizing the benefits of chiropractic care.  Unfortunately, you may have an “old school,” doctor who has yet to realize the benefits.  What should you do?

First, turn to the internet.  Perform a standard internet search with the phrase “chiropractic benefits.”  You will see many results.  Many are websites of chiropractors explaining their practice and their medical schooling.  Others are firsthand accounts of pain suffering people who have sought and received relief from a chiropractor.  So, if some people do seek relief from this type of medical care, why are some primary care physicians so against the procedure?

For starters, it takes away from their profits.  Doctors run profitable businesses, but those profits aren’t always staggeringly high amounts.  With state aid from Medicaid and Medicare programs and insurance companies who only want to pay less, some private practices are suffering.  Your primary care physician realizes that if you do seek relief from a chiropractor you will continue to seek that relief and no longer need their services as much.  Someone suffering from financial troubles does not want to lose paying clients.

Although some primary care physicians are concerned about the financial aspects of losing patients to chiropractic care, others believe it does not work.   Primary care physicians tend to believe that medications and surgery are the best courses of treatment.  Chiropractors utilize neither.  They provide natural relief.  They do more than just temporarily relieve the pain; they stop it at the source.  They do so naturally with manual therapy.  A patient with neck pain may just need an adjustment.  This is done with precision force and thrust.

If you want to seek chiropractic care, do.  You should not care what your primary care physician has to say.  Truthfully, he or she should be supportive of your decision.  If they believe it will not work, they should still let you try.  A doctor who discourages you or outright prohibits you from seeing a chiropractor does not have your best interest at heart.  As previously stated, this care is all-natural, so there are minimal risks, you have nothing to lose.

If you are interested in scheduling an appointment with a chiropractor, turn to your local phonebook or the internet.  If your primary care physician was unreceptive to the treatment, they likely don’t have a referral or suggestion for you.  If covered by health insurance, see if coverage is extended to chiropractor care.  If it is, choose one that accepts your insurance.  With insurance coverage or price comparing, you can easily find an affordable chiropractor.  Since you have nothing to lose physically and the costs are affordable, see what type of relief you can get.

Chiropractic Care vs. Drug-based Medical Care

Picture
By: Dr. Xavier A. Ortiz Ramírez DC, MD, NRCME

Are you suffering from mild to severe pain and discomfort?  Whether it is your knees, hands, neck, back, fingers, toes, or another part of the body that hurts, you may be ready to schedule an appointment with your primary care physician.  This is nice, but have you considered chiropractic care?  If not, you should.  It is similar, but also quite different from traditional medical care.  How?

Natural versus Artificial

Over the past few years, a lot of focus has been placed on natural and organic.  Many Americans are making the switch to all-natural and organic foods and supplements.  This nice, but many of those same people turn to traditional forms of medicine and over-the-counter pain relievers to seek relief.  This is not natural.  Chiropractic care is. Chiropractors may use x-rays and MRIs to diagnose a problem and decide on a course of treatment, but that treatment is done with the precision of the hands.  It is manual therapy.

Medications

Medications are commonly prescribed in traditional forms of medical care.  They are not with chiropractic care.  Chiropractors are unable to write prescriptions.  Some believe this is because they “aren’t enough of a doctor.”  This is not true.  The main reason for their inability to write prescriptions is because they do not believe in their use.  Patients are not discouraged from seeking temporary pain relief with over-the-counter products, but it is only temporary.  Chiropractors prefer to adjust treat the problem of pain at its source, not mask the problem with prescription medication.

Side Effects

In keeping with medication, it is important to note the side effects.  They are common.  It is rare to find a prescribed pain reliever without side effects.  Even little side effects, such as an upset stomach or dizziness, can have a profound impact on your life.  When seeking medical care, you want to seek relief, not have a new set of problems to deal with.  That is why chiropractic care is best to treat pain, discomfort, and decreased mobility.  Since there are no drugs prescribed, you will not experience side effects.  But you will get positive effects from either proper adjustments or therapeutic massages.

Safety

In terms of safety, there are little to no risks associated with chiropractic care.  Care is recommended for individuals of all ages.  Both those young and old can benefit from chiropractic care.  With traditional medical care, there are more risks present.  Many of the medications prescribed are only safe for certain individuals.  For example, those under the age of 4 can rarely seek safe pain relief from over the counter or prescribed medications.  They can, however, get a safe therapeutic massage or undergo a safe realignment to treat pain and discomfort.

Complications

Chiropractors cannot perform surgery.  In most cases, it is not needed.  Patients who seek medical care experience pain, discomfort, and decreased mobility.  As previously stated, realignment or a therapeutic massage may do the trick.  Since surgery is only considered a last resort and performed by a surgeon, there is little risk of complications.  Surgery opens a world of complications, including the invasion of germs and infection.  Since the body is naturally healed using manual therapy, complications are non-existent.

NOTE:  Chiropractors encourage those suffering from pain, discomfort, and difficultly moving to seek chiropractic care.  What they don’t encourage is avoiding all traditional forms of medical care.  Some conditions, such as the flu, cancer, and diabetes cannot be treated with manual therapy.  Never put your health at risk.  Chiropractic care is best to treat pain and discomfort.  Always keep your primary care physician in mind for other non-pain related medical problems.

In short, there are many differences between chiropractic care and medical care.  So, which should you opt for?  If you suffer from pain or have trouble moving, contact a local chiropractor.  See what they can do for you.  Since there are little to no risks, you have nothing to lose.

How to Seek Chiropractic Care After a Car Accident

Picture
By: Dr. Xavier A. Ortiz Ramírez DC, MD, NRCME

Were you in a car accident?  Did you visit your primary care physician or the hospital?  Were you sent home with a prescribed pain reliever?  If so, you may have a mild form of whiplash or just a sore body.  Yes, pain may subside over time, but don’t you want immediate relief?   Also, do not you want to know if there is a more serious problem instead of waiting for it to explode later?  After a car accident, victims should never take risks.  They should schedule an appointment with a licensed chiropractor.

Why should you seek chiropractic care after a car accident?   For starters, chiropractors do not just try to hide the problem of pain with medication.  They do not use it.  Instead, they rely on manual therapy.  For pain that will subside over time, therapeutic massages are best.  For spinal or joint injuries, adjustments are best.  Whatever the treatment, manual therapy is used.  It involves the hands.  To make a proper diagnosis after a serious car accident, an MRI, sonogram, or x-ray may be used.

Another reason why you should seek chiropractic care after a car accident is to prevent later complications.  Not all injuries result in pain.  Some are just minor enough that there is no pain.  That does not mean something did not happen to the body, your muscles, joints, or spine.  Chiropractors will examine the body and they can determine if anything is even slightly wrong or out of place.  Treatment will ensure.  Primary care physicians tend to wait until the pain is a symptom before taking action.

You now know the benefits of seeking chiropractic care after a car accident, so what should you do?  Schedule an appointment.  You may first want to speak with your car insurance provider or the at-fault driver.  Most car insurance claims cover medical treatment sought because of an accident.  You do not need to wait.  Most insurance providers extend coverage to chiropractic care.  They are legally classified as contact physicians by the federal government.  All insurance companies should accept the treatment and diagnosis of a chiropractor, if not keep on pushing.

Since you should not wait for approval to see a chiropractor, familiarize yourself with your local options.  You can do so by using your local phone book or the internet.  When using the internet, perform a standard internet search with the phrase “chiropractor,” and your city and state.  You will be linked to the websites of local providers in your area.  You can use these to examine rates, get a feel for the professional, and see pictures of their office.  Once you find a chiropractor you like, schedule an appointment.

Sometimes, it can be difficult to get an immediate appointment.  This is because chiropractic care is increasing in popularity; there is high demand.  Some have a waiting list.  When making your appointment, state you were in a serious car accident.  Some schedulers may be willing to squeeze you in or contact you in the event of a late cancellation.

If seeking care immediately following a car accident, you may need to wait to file a claim.  If the chiropractor requires immediate payment, pay or give your health insurance information.  The rest can be worked out later.  For now, it is important to seek treatment for any pain or discomfort you are feeling.  Care should always come first.

How to Lessen Your Fear of Going to the Chiropractor

Picture
By: Dr. Xavier A. Ortiz Ramírez DC, MD, NRCME

Do you need to seek pain relief from a chiropractor?  If this is your first time seeking chiropractic care, you may be both excited and overwhelmed.  You want a pain-free life, but any new medical treatment is scary.  You have nothing to fear about this natural healthcare, but it may be difficult to stop your mind from wandering.  So, how can you lessen your fear of going to the chiropractor?

Know that they are real medical professionals.  It is widely accepted now, but in the past, it was touted as a form of alternative medicine.  These are real medical professionals, just like your primary care physician.  They just specialize in all-natural pain relief with manual therapy.  Someone cannot just wake up and decide to be a chiropractor.  Years of schooling, training, and testing is required.

Think about the pain.  Most experts suggest not concentrating on the pain.  For many, it just makes the pain worse.  You want to think about the pain.  Think about it a lot.  Consider where it hurts, how much it hurts, and how it is negatively influencing your life.  Does your neck pain prevent you from playing with your kids or enjoying a game of golf?  Once again, focus on your pain and the limitations it imposes.

Next, think about the relief.  You just realized how your pain is influencing your life and it is never good.  Now, focus on the relief.  What would you do if you didn’t feel pain?  You would feel less depression, be able to play with your kids, and enjoy some of your favorite hobbies.  A life without pain sounds nice, doesn’t it?  You have no reason to fear a chiropractor but focus on your life without pain.  It should give you that extra push you need to attend your appointment and with confidence.

Ask those you know about their experiences.  Chances are, you know at least one person who has undergone chiropractic care.  Talk to them.  Whether it be a family member, friend, neighbor, or coworker, ask about their experiences.  What type of treatment did they undergo?  Ask them to explain in detail.  Ask about pain.  Did they feel any during treatment and did the pain subside afterward?  If your acquaintance has nothing but good things to say about a certain chiropractor, consider seeking treatment from that same practitioner.

Ask to meet with the doctor beforehand.  One of the fears people have isn’t necessarily related to the practice of chiropractic, but their new provider.  It is always a nerve-racking meeting with a new medical professional.  You are entrusting that person with your life and to cure your pain.  A positive working relationship is a must.  See if you can meet with your new chiropractor before your first appointment, even if just for five minutes.  Gauge their personality and passion.  Pickup forms while there, so you can fill them out at home and not in the waiting room at your first appointment.

While at your appointment, ask questions.  With primary care physicians, some patients are so worked up about the blood-drawing needle that they don’t even know why samples are taken.  Don’t let this happen to you.  Ask your chiropractor to explain each action.  It will ease your fears, as you are not unaware or left wondering.  You always know what is going on.

How to Avoid Needing a Chiropractor

Picture
By: Dr. Xavier A. Ortiz Ramírez DC, MD, NRCME

Chiropractic care has many benefits.  It relieves pain for either a long time or permanently.  Although you do not need a reason to seek chiropractic care, because this natural form of medicine is safe, most turn to a chiropractor when in pain.  If you are uninsured or have coverage that does not extend to chiropractic care, you want to limit your visits.  How can you reduce the need for a chiropractor?

With good posture.  Poor posture is the leading cause of back and neck pain.  It is important to sit up straight, but vital when sitting at a desk or computer eight hours a day.  If you have slouched for years, still visit a chiropractor.  They can see if any damage has been done and fix it.  Then, work on correcting your posture.  Each time you find yourself slouching, sit up straight.

With good exercise habits.  Those who want to lose weight, rely heavily on exercise to achieve their goal.  Unfortunately, many make costly mistakes.  These mistakes include overdoing it and poor exercise habits.  Lifting weights is good for building muscle strength, but it is easy to damage the back, spine, and other joints.  Hold all weight right and choose a low weight.  Never overdo it.  Stop exercising when tired.

With ideal weight.  Not only should you exercise but eat healthy too. When combined these should result in weight loss or the maintaining of healthy body weight.  Those who are overweight or obese are at an increased risk of back pain, neck pain, and knee pain.  The body can carry around excess weight, but it isn’t healthy.  Lose weight, maintain a healthy weight, and eliminate the need for chiropractic care.

With good stretching habits.  Everyone should stretch.  It is important to stretch before any strenuous activity, but some can benefit from regular stretching.  Those with rheumatoid arthritis can seek relief pain relief and reduce the risk of stiffness and deformities.  Stretching can promote healthy joints and muscles, which should reduce the need for a chiropractor.

With good sleeping habits.  A lot of focus is placed on our activities during the day, but how you sleep can also bring on pain and the need for a chiropractor.  For starters, always sleep on a bed.  It is easy to fall asleep on a couch or in a recliner when watching television, but prolonged sleep in this position can lead to pain.  A good mattress is also important.  Even if on a budget, a good, quality mattress is a wise investment.

With good lifting habits.  We all lift things.  Whether it be boxing when moving, grocery bags from shopping, or when shoveling snow, we all do it.  Most people do not lift properly.  Yes, it is easier to lift with your arms and elbows, but this places a strain on all joints.  The spice, back, and neck are susceptible to pain.  Instead, lift with your entire body.  Bend your knees and keep your back straight.  Never carry loads that are too heavy.

As you can see, there are many ways to reduce or eliminate the need for a chiropractor.  What are you waiting for?  Get started now.  But, if you are getting a late start in life, see a chiropractor first.  Ensure all joints and the spine are intact and properly.  Then, get started.
